about

Why do we exist? Is there a God or gods? If not, how are we to make sense of ourselves, as sentient beings who find themselves in a magnificent universe which might not even have any cause for its existence? Why is there something rather than nothing?

By coming to terms with these enigmatic questions, a state of tranquillity and inner harmony, or literally 'freedom from distress" (Ataraxia) can eventually be attained.

The process of philosophical meditation itself can eventually calm the mind, as Marcus Aurelius, the Stoic philosopher & Roman emperor from 161 to 180 CE, describes in his "Meditations" (4.3):

“He has within him [i.e., the philosopher] such thoughts that by looking into them he is immediately in perfect tranquillity; and I affirm that tranquillity is nothing else than the good ordering of the mind…"

To musically attempt to evoke these profound thoughts, this piece features the introspective yet poignant sounding ancient Greek Phrygian Mode - the equivalent intervals as D-D on the white notes of the piano, this mode was misnamed the 'Dorian' mode by early medieval scholars. The distinctively poignant and intense qualities of this ancient Greek mode are further enhanced in this track, using just intonation to create geometrically pure musical intervals.
